Reading GR for the first time and, oddly, read this section just yesterday. Enjoyed the analysis and I've certainly gained some clarity. Thanks.

This was one of my favorite chapters to write about and was one of the first ones where I felt like I had some sort of breakthrough. Glad it could help.

On the second footnote, I believe the scratching the ends and going beyond and “another form of being” is also a reference to the metaphors of the rocket for humanity. Its parabolical trajectory is both transcendence of being and descent into death. In our lives our two goals (well goal of living and the inevitable end) is some form of spiritual transcendence and then our impending death.
