Entirely too familiar. Pynchon is definitely getting at the fact that the events of the 18th century pretty accurately predicted those of the 20th and that it should be absolutely no surprise that anything ended up this way. Which proves that complicity, silence, or lack of action when presented with such evidence will only ever lead to a new or worse era of whatever was happening before.
